INTRODUCTION OF THE ARAN - UNIVERSAL BLS EMERGENCY GUIDELINE
Ten Benefits of ASHPA over DRSABCD
- Removes notional inference that a “doctor” is a necessary part or endpoint of the application of BLS. The ABCDE of ALS is a post BLS clinical assessment to determine diagnosis and intervention and is not directly adaptable to OOH BLS.
- Restructures hierarchy to move priority appropriately toward compressions and defibrillation to address the most common scenario i.e. SCA
- Enables management of all emergency scenes rather than being targeted to hypoxic cardiac arrest or collapse
- Provides assessment elements in cases of multiple casualties and/or responders (that is not present in (DRSABCD)
- Corrects level of seeking help to ensure an understanding of assistance required for type of incident over that for collapse
- Corrects LOC criteria to an appropriate clinical indicator i.e. response to pain, over a test for sleep present in DRSABCD
- Correctly uses pain response and status of breathing to determine action over simple OHCA as the sole reason for unconsciousness and/or breathing difficulties
- Prioritises actions based on likely aetiology of arrest over singular, common regime regardless of cause or non-arrest scenario
- Provides logical segway into first aid secondary assessment in the non-arrest scenario
- Streamlines evaluation of casualty to determine actions in all situations
